The difference between using DC and AC traction motors for dynamic braking (regenerating) is that AC ones don't have to have their motor connections re-arranged; just adjust the imposed AC frequency so it's below slip (essentially it tries to make the motor run slower). The motor will then generate, but the power still has to be dissipated in resistance grids.
