Heavy oil like #5 and #6 is difficult to get in the interior of the country. It is available on the coasts I guess for marine use. Waste oil is about all you can get in the middle western states (Colorado, Wyoming, etc.) without incurring large transportation fees to bring it in from the coasts. In the last few years of UP steam operation I know they were using waste oil at least when they fueled up locally. This because I buy from the same supplier UP was using, Jebro. Waste oil works OK as the product Jebro supplies is at least blended and filtered to make it resemble something that will actually burn. Nothing beats a heavy refined oil like #5 or #6, though.
