The presence of freight just brings in FRA-AAR rules and headaches.

I saw a "SMARTbug" last week rolling thru town at about 30mph. Locomotive sized - way more massive than required for a Northbay transit op. LACMTA sized light rail rolling stock would work fine. After a few grade crossing accidents they will reduce their 79mph projected speed limit anyway.

Perhaps after 20 years or so the insiders behind NWP and the BART-MTC empire will accept a non 3rd rail Indian Broad Gauge real rapid transit for the Northbay into the City.

In fact sell the SMARTbugs to BART. They can be BARTbugs.
