After 140 years of rail service to Mare Island All service has been suspeneded with the last run taking place on March 31. There are 56 miles of heavy (130lb) rail well ballasted lines circling the island with 4 customers still wanting rail service. The problem is there are no crossing signals on the island and Cal PUC stipulated 11 million dollars in improvements for the operation to continue. The tracks are owned by the city of Vallejo which is bankrupt and managed by developer Lemare which wants the tracks removed. In the mean time freight is off loaded at American Canyon and trucked in. The original roundhouse is still on the Island, remodeled as use for a sports complex. Vallejo has two rails lines, the other runing to Sperry Mills which closed in 2004. If anyone is interested in seeing photos of Mare Island in the days of steam (8 steam locos in the roundhouse)check Times Herald on line Sunday May 4. Gary G.
