As far as fiber optics go, that wasn't the SP Sprint at the time.

Unlike other railroads, the SP used their old wire system to the last gasp. Then someone woke up and figured, Hey,MicroWave, was the way to go.

That was the start of Sprint. They threw a lot of money into it and it turned out to be a good investment. Along came BFB and there went Sprint and later SP Pipe Lines. He had already tossed PMT into cash raising.
