Hate to break it to you, but railroads and politics go together like beer & pizza. It's been that way in the United States ever since railroads were first built in the 1800s.
Building of the first transcontinental railroad, the Credit Mobilier, The 1877 Railroad Strike, establishment of the Interstate Commerce Commission, Jim Crow laws, creation of the United States Railway Administration, New Deal-era loans to the Pennsylvania Railroad for electrification, Penn Central debacle, creation of Amtrak under the Nixon Administration, what has happened to Amtrak since its creation, Congressional hearings on the Milwaukee Road Crisis, railroad deregulation under the Carter Administration, Senator Howard Cannon's push for Amtrak to inaugurate the Desert Wind (AKA, the "Cannon Ball"), the Conrail creation under the Ford Administration, the Reagan Administration's attempt to sell Conrail to Norfolk Southern, Conrail split among Norfolk Southern and CSX, Positive Train Control, Congressman Denham's "success" in requiring Amtrak to allow pets on trains...well the list could go on and on...
