If we are going to do this, we should do it now, while gas is under $2 for most of the country. Our roads are beat and reaching design life expectancy, and it shows.

Yes, as noted, we will have to make trade offs on what we buy.

In this case, most auto drivers will be buying less front end alignments, depreciation, and longer tire life from not having to continue to drive on our truck damaged 50+ year old interstates. Because most of us auto drivers will easily offset the cost added to the gas, with these savings. And, with this kind of tax, even the truckers will have to pay the same as the rest of us, which they often don't do now on certain fuel taxes.
