I have been making this point at union meetings for years. I'm happy to hear it from the BRT president's mouth.
1. The railroad can't make a worker do anything. Its not a prison but rather a choice we make every time we go to work. And that applies to every task we do during a shift.
2. When ordered to do something prohibited by contract or unsafe we have option to refuse. The company has the option to fire us. We have the option to seek reinstatement and lost pay. If the contract has been violated it is likely we'll win. If not then we've made a decision to leave the service of the company.
Know the contract, know the Federal regulations, decide if you want to follow orders or fight a dismissal. Its all quite simple.
