With all the emphasis on drug use or work ethic, I suppose to be more responsive to the initial question we should note that it is not common for someone to go directly into locomotive engineer training. The normal entry process is to start as a trainman and proceed from there. Checking a railroad's website under "employment" or "jobs" or something like that will give plenty of information. Examples:
