For the same purpose machinists use DYCHEM layout fluid. It leaves a dark blue coating on metal that can be scribed to layout the work to be done. If necessary it can be removed with solvent and it doesn't harm the metal. But it would be hard to work with in a poorly lit area and costs lots more.
