What a great look back at the wonderful transit systems
we once had here in the SF Bay Area -- and beyond.

Harre Demoro makes one very important point when discussing
rail-based transit systems: because their routes cannot easily
be changed at a moment's notice, investors can plan to make long-
term investments in those areas that have these rail transit systems.
This, in turn, leads to stability and economic health in those areas.

It is also true that people often choose where to live based on the
location of rail transit systems. This was certainly true for my
parents in the 1950s. I know -- mere anecdotal evidence, but it is
an important factor.
