Hah! You never saw the engineer widen on the throttle after one had been idling for a prolonged period of time.

Some once told me this was because they had Westinghouse 6-pole traction motors, which you could get a lot of get-up and go out of. However, they were really expensive to repair and/or rewind when they had a problem. Oddly enough, 44-tonners have 6 pole traction motors.
