Was it under load or idling? I have heard the UP ones do some sort of weird idle thing where it sounds like rather than all 12 cylinders firing at 3% load or whatever it needs to keep turning over, it alternates with one of the cylinders firing hard, and the others along for the ride. It will do that for maybe a minute or two, then go back to idling like normal, and then start hammering on one hole.

If i was under load, I have no idea, it was probably suffering some sort of mechanical fault.
