Trains and lightening

After seeing a few shots of trains with lightening in the picture, it occurred to me: Trains must get hit every so often (nice conducting path to ground, and especially on the plains, they're often the tallest thing around).

How often do trains get hit? What happens when they do? If an engine gets hit, does it mess it up? Does it mess up the signals? Or is it just a really loud noise for the engine crew?
