In the mid 60s we had a guy on the MILW that heated his home for 5 years with the stuff. He had an old 5 gallon can they used to carry in the back of an army geep which he stole while he was in the guard. Every night while hostling he would fill it and take it home for his home heating oil tank.

Another time we had just filled a almost new GP40 with fuel. The foreman came out and said"take her to the north lot boys and dump the fuel." We did as instructed and at the north lot the foreman opened the main fuel drain valve and opened the fuel filler cap....for the next half hour or so we drove that GP back and forth just dumping that diesel fuel into the ground. I asked the foreman WHY we were doing this and he stated they had to make some sort of repair to the fuel tank and it was fueled by mistake. The foreman lamented how he had a couple of diesel tracters on his farm and could have put that 3,000 gallons to good use.

If I remember correctly, diesel back in 1966 was 10 cents a gallon and it was spilled and slopped everywhere. Hell...the stuff was so bad that you would go through a pair of work boots every six months hostling cause it would rot those boots right off your feet!
