You guys are too hung up on accouting tricks when calculating the cost of driving vs the cost of transit. Take insurance - you're paying that every six months whether the car is driven or sits in the garage. If you have car payments, they don't let it slide if the car is idle.
The other problem is that you may just well end up putting more miles on your car anyway. You still have to get from home to the transit station, and more often than not that is out of the way. You still have to buy groceries, run errands, etc. So instead of taking care of that errand on the way to or from work, you double back to town after you get back off the trolley. I know when I get off work I rarely jet straight home, errands seem to be a daily occurence.
You see, aggregation works great for freight, but not so well for free-minded individuals.
