I was a car host on that trip, and we had a diabetic in our car--I was able to get some food from the 1st class cars to prevent a medical emergency. That was a most difficult trip for the passengers who were basically trapped onboard with little foodstuffs available. Hal did do a yeoman job finding SOMETHING to give the passengers very late in the day--although the First Class folks had food the whole time!
It was because of this experience that when I was helping plan the later trips to Dunsmuir & Cantara Loop, I insisted on extra food being onboard from the start. I figured any leftover would be given to the volunteer crew as a thank you. Far better to have some leftovers than to be short of food in case of some track hold-up.
Those were great days when we could run excursions!!
BTW, I got two flat tires on my truck the morning of the Canyon run getting supplies to the diner car (ran over something in the ballast); didn't know it until we got back to Oroville and detrained!
