I will be interested in the running time over Tehachapi vs. The Coast Line. Regardless of the outcome today, I don't see Amtrak moving The Coast Starlight to an inland route, for several reasons:
1) Amtrak spends a great deal of money & effort to market Trains 11 & 14 as a PREMIUM service, with the view of the Central California Coast as a major selling point;
2) Amtrak ( & various commuter train operators ) basically have the Coast Line to themselves, with little interference from Union Pacific freight trains, vs. heavy UP & BNSF traffic over Tehachapi;
3) Union Pacific's general ambivalence towards Amtrak, Alex Kummant notwithstanding.
