78-foot has been standard for over 20 years. Nobody
measures rail by the yard, except when referring to weight,
which is in pounds per yard.
UP now gets rail in something like 350 or 400-foot lengths
by the shipload, welds 3 of them together virtually on the
dock, (2 welds total) and ends up with one VERY long rail.
