A train, a truck ... or both?

In the Pomona rail yard in west Greensboro, the truck attached to four trailers on the rails caught my eye.

An Asplundh-owned truck with a sleeping compartment for the driver and trailers with rubber tires lifted and steel rail wheels lowered to the tracks. It was idling on a rail siding.

Later, the truck, pulling three or four empty flat rail cars, sped north on Norfolk Southern's northbound main line tracks bordering Fisher Park.

A photo of this whatchamacallit was sent via e-mail to Robin Chapman, Norfolk Southern's public relations specialist for North Carolina and several other states. He and others at the railroad were stumped.

"No one in our intermodal department recognizes this particular equipment," he replied. "It's not something we use or are experimenting with. My best guess is that it was somebody else's test run that was just passing through."
