I just watched, and then showed my friend this movie. He asked why all the black smoke. I have worked on and operated diesels, from small generators to giant navy marine engines, although not Alcos very much. My answer was poor combustion, due to design of chambers and type of injectors, especially during sudden application of load or overload or overspeed. Any Alco guys here to expand on my answer as to why they have the reputation of smokers besides my answer? I have never seen any other engine smoke like an Alco locomotive, even with bad injectors or pumps.
