BNSF has allowed select members of the "Friends of BNSF" to ride a special trip aboard their business train. Years ago, when I lived in Montana, BNSF actually hosted a Whitefish High School reunion aboard the train.

UP, when its business train was in town with the 844, hosted a dinner aboard the train with various city and government officials.

So, just like a corporate jet, or corporate retreat - it's just another way that these companies can interact with customers, government officials, or other VIPs. Same with having membership at a private club or golf course, or having a luxury box suite at a sporting stadium.
