The worst thing was that since the exhaust exited through the top of the DPF, they couldn't keep it from entering the cab - both during normal operations and when the burner was burning. It got to the point where crews were refusing to use the locomotive. UP then tried using it as the second unit in RCL consists, but the PCS wouldn't reset from belt packs.
