Ghost Riders in the Sky brings to mind that only a few miles north at Point Honda, now known as Point Pedernales, in 1924 was the largest peacetime loss of naval ships in US History. A squadron of four-stack destroyers was engaged in an engineering run from SF to San Diego when a navigation error caused them to steer eastward a several miles north of their intended location causing 7 to run aground and be lost. Crews originally thought they had struck one of the nearby islands until a passing train caught their attention. Remarkably only 23 souls were lost.
