Two alternatives come to mind
Go long way around via Niles Cyn- the original WP and completion of the transcontinental line
Borrow a freight barge from Oakland- was one named 'Thoroughfare"?
SP/CP had a shipyard at Oakland
But were the Benecia boat repaired at Port Costa?
