Railroading career path

Say a new kid (HS Diploma) hires with BNSF in today's 2016 (please NO Political BS). He can start as fireman/brakeman or conductor and then what happens? Eventually according to the BNSF website, he can become engineer after a couple of years or so. What happens then? Can he become Trainmaster or Director of Operations or Management? How is the industry these days (please no whining, be constructive and provide solutions). Amtrak is an option, but let's focus on FREIGHT operators, including shortlines and regionals.

Could he go to college afterwards and go to civil engineering or logistics? I've known old heads (Espee and Santa Fe) that started as track workers and ended up in management with RR Retirement, degree and work as consultants after 65!
