Did not know Mr. Chathman.
I knew San Rafael during the war when the steam locomotive pulled trains used to stop by Henry Hess Lumber Co next to the tracks. In those days the Railroad Depot was across 3rd street from the Greyhound Bus station. I don't know what occupies the space now but thought that might be where GG Transit would locate their depot.
Also in those days the railroad went to the shops and turntable in Tiburon. There was a railroad ferry barge slip in Tiburon. A Santa Fe tug used to pull the barges with the cars over to the Oakland Estuary.I did get some ties from Tiburon for the back garden steps when they tore all that out. There used to be some action during the war in Sausalito with the ship yards going full bore. American Distillery, Bullard and a few others lasted until the late 40's mid 50's.
In the 60's all that was left was a lumber stop in San Rafael along with gravel, sand and cement for Camgros, Mc Phails and Shamrock Materials. I left in the mid 70's and lost track of what went on there.
Did not fish the bay. I liked to fish for trout in Lake Laganitus. Did best there. Got skunked at Bon Tempe and got a couple at Alpine. The limit in those days was fifteen. Never did any good in Phonex Lake either.
Back to the trains. Everybody hated to get stuck on 3rd,4th, 5th or the Mission Stree intersections when the steam locomotives came down through town. Of course I loved it and didn't care how long it took them to clear the intersections.
Tiburon was a little far for a kid to ride to from San Anselmo or San Rafael. Didn't get down there until I got my drivers license. By then the steam days were pretty much over.
