Is Muni a 600, 750, or 1200 volt dc installation?
What is the KV to be used on the Caltrain electrification?
What is the maximum speed required for Muni and the line tension required for that catenary or trolley poll based system?
What is the proposed maximum speed and tension reqirements for Caltrain and CHSRA's equipment?
Without charging you a fee for the actual answers or a prediction, I will venture to inform you that your question is an apples and oranges comparision of the needs involved. And, that I fully expect this will likely be a fairly complex "heavt duty" electrification project. This is also reflected in many of the "high speed" lines around LA, where even speeds of 55 require a much more robust overhead installation.
As others have noted, for better or worse, a range of 22.5 feet seems in line with what the RR's and current higher voltage AC systems require.
My favorite trick was to listen to some of the RR types try to go claim that bridge replacement was necessary everywhere, in order to jack up electrification costs, to show a low cost benefit for air quality purposex, and I would wait to point out that it might be much cheaper to lower the tracks, in many places.......
