I was a ticket clerk for the UP at Riverside, CA in 1959 & 1960. Back then, you could route people various ways to their destinations. Many times, I sold tickets to people traveling that were willing to travel out of the way to get to Chicago and beyond. If I remember the UP and NP were at different stations in Butte. I do remember there was an additional charge to move baggage between the stations.
