After hours of official discussion and public comment, the Novato City Council voted late Tuesday night to tell councilwoman Carol D. Knutson to vote in her capacity as a SMART board member to put a proposed quarter-cent sales tax on the November ballot to fund the SMART commuter train.
“I don’t think we can deny Novato voters the right vote on ... public transportation,” said councilwoman Jeanne MacLeamy.
Councilwoman Madeline Kellner concurred, “We need to let the public decide.
Mayor Pat Eklund and councilman Jim Leland expressed the most reservations about SMART.
Leland said with resignation, “Let’s be real. The SMART board has the votes to put it on the ballot. They’re going to put it on the ballot.”
The four voted in favor, with Knutson abstaining.
