Re: GGRM's ambition for the mainline

Here is an unsolicited opinion that will cost you as much as it's worth.

Anybody notice how crowded and congested it is around the Niles Canyon's
yard? Especially since they agreed to provide a temporary home for GGRM's
equipment. Just switching out a car or two takes forever with so little
space. This probably won't get better as time goes by and either or both
groups get the occasional "new" piece of equipment.

As to old farts and egos, there are plenty on both sides; some on both sides
in positions to cause heartache here and there. There are also some old
farts on both sides with much clearer vision than some of the others. They
see possible challenges and try to plan ahead. Not always perfect, but what
about this line of endeavor ever is? And what's new about it? Same thing
goes on at any organization of more than 1 person. The jealousies and rivalries
in rail museums/preservation/operations will never go away 100%.

I am not sure GGRM wants to run "mainline excursions." And even if they did,
where and on whose railroad? You can rule out UP and JBP and ACE, unless it's
done under Amtrak, which is a whole 'nother can of worms. One of the
attractions of Davenport was the trackage they could run on, and I'm sure that
is also an attraction for the NWP site. While there has been a lot of whining
here about the salt air at Davenport, that can be dealt with. The local noisy
NIMBY's will always be an issue no matter where they move to.

Both organizations have differing goals, as well as some of the same goals.
For now, it is probably best for both organizations to go their separate ways
and work on their differing goals where they are not in each other's way,
real or imagined.
