The lead-in describes a wreck on the UP
The train broke in two
The air brakes failed to hold the train
But the crew was faulted for not setting hand brakes.
Can we get the source online please?
If the crew were faulted for not setting handbrakes, it would seem the brakes actually did stop the train, until the air bled off.
Similar to Lac Megantic.
Not setting hand brakes and depending on 'bottled' air was determined to be a very bad idea waaay back in the 19th century.
