Thinking they might not be the best prints made from the negatives, I downloaded a couple and looked at them with my hand-dandy graphics program. Turns out the washed out appearance is an effect of how the website presents the images in the OP's post. The downloads look just fine with regard to contrast, density, brightness/darkness, etc.
