Yo, Ducky boy, those "poor" results you see arise from a combination of 1) your browser and its graphics engine, 2) your graphics card, 3) your monitor, 4) your operating system, etc. I see the same thing on my system (using Firefox). However, if you download copies of the pix and look at them with a dedicated graphics viewing program, they're quite OK.
As for print quality and composition: Edward Weston is renowned for making the best B&W prints, and Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, etc. are renowned for composition. I've never seen railfan pix which measure up to them, and I include my own RR pix when I say this.
