They do change gauge by changing bogies (trucks to us unwashed Americans) everyday at the Russian-Chinese border - Have been doing it for years.

At least according to a PBS documentary on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Actually, they showed the process performed on a fairly recent transcontinental russian express train (Moscow to Bejing). It took a while (several hours) - enough for passengers to roam about the local tourist trap. Took the better part of a week to go the whole distance.
