If wiki provided a map, you would see that except for two lines, AU Rys hug the coast. The two that don't are the transcontinental to Perth and the N-S transcon that now goes up to Darwin.
There's a LOT of empty middle.
The coal country I'm aware of is a short hop west from Newcastle, around Maitland.
Back in the 1880s SP built the long wharf at Santa Monica. Among other things, Australian coal was landed there for use in SP Locomotives.
