One of most well known train related songs is 'Orange Blossom Special'. I've found that many versions are just plain countrified hokey, even when covered by competent bluegrass bands.
Fortunately there is a standout - the version performed by the little known band Seatrain. The electrified fiddle player is Richard Greene who is alive, well and teaching music.
Back on topic - not really an REM fan so I won't offer an opinion about the OP.
