Wood trestles in general

Is this just a wood pile trestle? I remember being amazed to learn that a charred wood trestle can still be structurally OK and need no repair.

A trestle in Redmond, WA, on a BN branch line had the piles charred on one end but damage was apparently deemed superficial as they were left alone and the double-geep powered trains of grain and government butter continued to roll over them.
