Maybe I said it or typed it incorrectly.
Way back, SP had guard rails on most bridges & tunnels.
Some where a long the line, a study was made and the SP figured the maintenance cost and the savings on derailments were not there. They also took the stance that dragging equipment would foul or hangup on guard rails causing a derailment. So out went most all the guard rails.
Union Pacific was always a firm believer of guard rails. When the UP took over the SP, the guard rails went back in.
As shown in the picture, guard rails were in place and that is what kept the car in line with the track structure.
