I was saddened, as I know all of you are, to learn this morning of the death of Key Route Ken. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Shattock in person but several years ago I e-mailed him with a few questions about that beloved Oakland Pier of his for a paper I was writing to present to a discussion group. I hoped to receive a short e-mail reply. Instead, my phone rang. "Hi, this is Key Route Ken," he announced cheerfully. Mr. Shattock spent the better part of an hour on the phone with me, unselfishly sharing his great knowledge. I will always be grateful and, like you, will miss his fascinating writings. My condolances and prayers go to his family.
