Just my unqualified opinion, but I always thought the obvious merger partner for KCS would be Canadian Pacific. They connect in Kansas City and don't otherwise overlap. BNSF, UP, and CN all run to the Gulf coast, but CP doesn't. Not that I'd actually like to see it happen, however.
