The 20-645E3 engines actually did NOT had "crank problems". The root cause of of all the early crankshaft "issues" was due to insufficient welding of the main A Frame main bearing supports inside the crankcase. Once that was addressed, any and all crankcases, both 16 and 20 cylinder, with serial numbers "72 J" and new, no longer had problems. With insufficient welding of those big forgings, the welds would crack under load, allowing the A Frame to pull away from the main structure of the crankcase, thus no longer supporting that specific crankshaft main bearing. Once that forged crankshaft began to bend/flex as a result of the loss of alignment, the crankshaft breaks, end of story.
