The SP&S F's could really roll, that much I know. Tried pacing the SP&S North Coast Ltd section in June of 1969 while driving a '63 Chevrolet Impala station wagon, which was equipped with a 283 cu. in. 2 bbl Turbo Fire V8. The location was probably near Roosevelt, WA and heading eastbound. I had that wagon rolling at 110 mph, which was wide open and even at that just barely keeping up with the train.
Still gives me shivers today thinking back on that day. The short lived X type frames, when put under the heavy station wagons, would twist at the center when correcting the steering and at higher speeds with just a slight correction, the tail end would sashay back and forth like a trailer. All was good though with new nylon tires and my fresh learners permit license.
Speaking of trains and cars, I recently replaced the original and never resurfaced brake rotors on my 1993 Chevrolet rv. They just finally wore away after 187k miles. What surprised me was to find the OE brake rotors were made in the USA by the Budd Co. The replacements will no doubt not be of the same quality.
