Yes I agree it is a long ass drive from anywhere.
However the map shows access roads along much of the railroad to access the Red Canyon trailhead, so at least you wouldn't have to hike in the heat very far.
Well, I hope someone gets a pic for historical documentation. These kinds of pics are always fascinating to look at.
