The round cab was a hold - over from the CF-7's F - Unit origins, used to save money. It was also quite cramped, with no headroom. Also, the cab doors had to be custom - fitted to the shorter height, which negated the cost savings of using the F-Unit roof. ( Some of the really early CF-7's even re - used the F - Unit side windows, complete with the crank - style opening mechanism !!! ) After 178 units were built with the round roof, Cleburne began applying their own square - roof cab, which was taller and deeper. Note that the " Topeka Cab " was NOT used on CF - 7's, but only on GP-7 & GP-9 rebuilds.
