My family moved from the Oakland area down to SoCal in late 1960 so my senior year of high school was at Whittier HS, graduating in 1961. Playing football there in the afternoons was the only time in my life that I ever experienced asthma. The smog was terrible. I got hired on the Santa Fe LA division right out of high school. Theoretically I had combination switchman-brakeman seniority but only worked out of First Street (sometimes Hobart) as a switchman. Except for transfer runs to other yards, and sometimes the coachyard jobs that went up to LAUPT, the closest I got to main line work was, by choice whenever I could, getting on the 223 or 323 Wingfoot jobs on the Harbor District where the switching limits went out about eight miles to nearly Inglewood. It was a pleasure to work at night in those days as it was somewhat easier breathing.
