Re Newberry Springs (red rock) I can't say how far this material was used by the railroad, but the quarry is now completely closed. However, the tailings are now being spread (filled) by CALTRANS in the median of Interstate 40 from Nebo (just east of Barstow) all the way to Pisgah/Lavic. They said that the low elevation of the center was causing a danger to vehicles that strayed too far off the left lanes. Some of the material is also coming from Elephant Mountain near Yermo. Project said to be complete by end of July.
