Today's San Francisco Chronicle has a picture of the Easter Parade in New York in 1900 and one of the parade in 1913. The first is all horses and carriages. The second has one horse and all the rest automobiles.
The article predicts that in a few decades there will only be 20% as many vehicles on the road as today, and they will be mainly electric, self driving and for hire. This will save the average family over $5,000 per year, eliminate any need to expand highways and open up lots of land in city centers.
On the other hand lots of jobs will disappear. Think buggy whip manufacturers.
