Another alternative route I forgot to mention would be to go north on US 95 from Coeur d'Alene to Sandpoint, then east on state 200 to Paradise MT, then state 135 back to I-90 at St Regis MT. This route mostly follows the MRL mainline and you should see some train action. However it is more miles (about 80-90) than the direct I-90 route. Beautiful scenery, though.
