Railroads in Nam? They were gone, blown up by he French by 64.
That copter film was in 67 or before. White name tags (made a good target) and the colored "US Army" patch were gone by 67. I think most all the rank strips were replaced with collar tabs-pins that were black by 69.
There was only one Railroad Battalion left back then, the 714th TBROS&DE at Ft. Eustis. They were training us back in 67-69 to operate steam engines for Europe or Korea. The only guys that went to Nam out of the 714th were guys that had their MOS changed to truck driver, etc.
There was "A" Company that worked on the track, etc.
There was "B" Company that worked on engines and car repair.
There was "C" Company that provided the engineers, fireman, brakemen and conductors.
Nice thing about "C" Company was we had 45s, not M-14 or 16s. Well we did have to go to DC a couple of times for riot control and we drew weapons, M-14s, from a truck company. Issued basball grenades, 40 rounds of ammo, 20 lock and load.
What sucked was having to do this in DC, our own country.
